Wu Shixiong’s Curriculum Vitae

Wu Shixiong, born in May 1963, Associate Professor in Foreign Languages Institute of Fujian Teachers University. 

1. Study and Work Experiences

Early in his childhood, he contracted poliomyelitis, paralyzed from the waist down. After having been studying at home on his own for a long period, he passed the Fujian Higher Education  Examination for the self-taught learners and got an associate degree in the English specialty in 1986. In the same year, he was engaged as an editor of Science and Technology of Rice and Wheat in Fujian. in Fujian Academy of Agriculture Science.

1990-1993, he was studying in the Foreign Languages Institute of Fujian Teachers University as a postgraduate. After his graduation with a Master’s degree in English linguistics in June 1993, he stayed on at the university as a faculty member.

1993-1996, Assistant Lecturer, English Dept., Fujian Teachers University;

1996-2000, Lecturer, English Dept., Fujian Teachers University;

2000-                             , Associative Professor, English Dept., Fujian Teachers University; Editor of Foreign Language and Literature Studies (Quarterly).

2003-     ,   studying for his PhD degree in the field of comparative linguistic research in Lingnan University in Hongkong.

 

2. Research Projects and Awards

2.1 His first research project Cognitive Fuzzy Linguistics (1990-1996) won the second prize in the appraisal of the young teachers' theoretical achievements of Fujian Teachers University in October 1997, and also the second prize in the third provincial appraisal of philosophic and socio-scientific research awarded by Fujian Provincial Government in September 1998.

2.2 His second research project Cultural Comparative Etymology was awarded in 1999 the first prize in the appraisal of the young teachers' theoretical achievements of Fujian Teachers University, and in 2000, the third prize in the fourth provincial appraisal of philosophical and socio-scientific research by Fujian Provincial Government.

2.3 His third research project Category and the Cognitive Studies of Fuzzy Semantics ( in cooperation with Professor Chen Weizhen) which was funded in 2001 by the Education Ministry of the People’s Republic of China as the planned project in the 10th five year research plan for social sciences in PRC and was awarded the first prize in the fifth provincial appraisal of philosophical and socio-scientific research by Fujian Provincial Government in 2003.

2.4 His fourth research project ( also in cooperation with Professor Chen Weizhen) was the translation of the book Postmodern Turn (edited by S. Seidman and published by Cambridge University Press in1994) into Chinese. This translation, published by Liaoning Education Press in 2001, also received high appraisals from the academic circle in China and for this reason it won the third prize in the fifth provincial appraisal of philosophical and socio-scientific research by the Provincial Government of Fujian Province in 2003.

2.5 His fifth research project The application of cognitive psychology in the teaching of English, French and Chinese Vocabulary
