Department of English Education
Growing out of the English Program under FNU’s former Foreign Languages Department, the Department of English Education (DEE) is proud to have turned out over 3,000 quality graduates since 1948. On the basis of its decades-long pedagogical practices, DEE’s English program has gained a distinct style and developed many unique strengths, and has been enjoying a high reputation in the province. As an indication of how selective the program has become, the scores of its incoming freshman classes in the past three years would have qualified all of them for admission to national key universities. And in 2004 it became one of FNU’s first batch of programs to be honored as the University’s “Priority Hallmark Programs.” Meanwhile, the new project Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, a joint effort with FNU’s International College of Chinese Studies, has begun to attract a lot of attention with its exceptional promise.
DEE now has 69 faculty members, among whom 9 are professors, 31 associate professors and 42 lecturers. In terms of academic degrees, there are 8 Ph.D. holders and 11 Ph.D. candidates.
Department of Japanese
Originally the Japanese Program under FNU’s former Foreign Languages Department, the Department of Japanese (DJ) has since 1972 graduated more than 400 B.A. and A.A. students. Over 90% of its faculty members have had extended periods of studying in Japan, and their keen personal interest in comparative studies of Chinese and Japanese cultures has found expression, in part, in the wide range of bicultural knowledge as well as the high proficiency in both oral and written translation for which their students in general are noted. Such students are much sought-after in the job markets concerned.
DJ now has 20 faculty members, among whom there are 2 professors, 8 associate professors and 5 lecturers. In terms of academic degrees, there are 1 Ph.D. holder and 1 Ph.D. candidate.
Department of Business English
From its modest beginning in 1994 as a new major in business English offered by the English Program, the Department of Business English (DBE) has developed into a full-fledged academic division offering two undergraduate programs: Business English and International Business & Trade. The Department sets as its goal the training of interdisciplinary professionals competent in both business and English. This mission is in line with the current demand of Fujian’s job market and has therefore been enthusiastically endorsed by the government and the public alike.
DBE now has 20 faculty members, among whom 2 are professors (with concurrent appointment in DEE), 5 associate professors and 8 lecturers. It also counts among its members 1 Ph.D. degree holder and 3 Ph.D. candidates.
College English Teaching and Research Division
Established in 1985, the College English Teaching and Research Division (CETRD) is responsible for teaching English to FNU’s over 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students not majoring in English. Its reform-minded faculty has been experimenting with new teaching methods for promoting a “self-taught” approach to foreign language learning among college students. Its “College English” has won the honor as one of the Outstanding Courses offered by Fujian’s institutions of higher learning. And it has been selected by the Ministry of Education as one of the first programs nationwide to launch a pilot project in reforming China’s college English teaching.
CETRD has 58 faculty members, of whom there are 1 professor (with concurrent appointment in DEE), 15 associate professors and 31 lecturers, including 1 with a Ph.D. and 2 having already won their Ph.D. candidacy.
Asian-European Languages Teaching and Research Division
The Asian-European Languages Teaching and Research Division (AELTRD) is composed of FLI teachers of Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Russian, and Esperanto. It is responsible for offering second foreign language instructions to FLI undergraduates and non-English foreign language instructions to all of FNU’s graduate students.
AELTRD has 6 faculty members, of whom there are 2 professors (with concurrent appointment in DJ), 2 associate professors and 2 lecturers.
